Being largely subjective, the assessment of odour impacts is a unique challenge on any site. We use a range of qualitative and quantitative assessment tools to achieve our clients’ goals, and our staff have had their olfactory sensitivity calibrated to add weight to our odour surveying capabilities.
Our odour expertise has wide ranging functions, including planning application support, complaints investigation and as a tool alongside air quality monitoring for the investigation of potential health impacts from industrial and land remediation activities, and in the indoor environment.
We have extensive experience of assessing odours from the development of odour sources such as sewage works, waste transfer stations, landfill, industry, restaurants and commercial kitchens, paint spraying and intensive agriculture, and for new residential schemes in the vicinity of these uses.

Cass Allen was appointed to undertake an Odour Assessment for a proposed residential conversion on a complex site sandwiched between the West Coast Mainline and the Grand Union Canal, and surrounded by a farmyard.
Being located within an active farm, potential odours from the housing of livestock, including cattle and sheep, were investigated. The Odour Risk Assessment included: discussions with the farmer to understand the activities and processes on site; a site odour survey including ‘sniff testing’; mapping of potential odour sources; and analysis of local meteorological data to establish the odour amenity risk.
