Cass Allen were instructed to investigate indoor air quality concerns at a printing facility in Bedford following reports of intermittent “mist” within the digital print areas and occasional complaints of odour and irritation from staff.
To build a comprehensive picture of workplace conditions, we designed a monitoring programme across the three production areas of concern. This combined real-time monitoring of particulate matter, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, temperature, humidity and ozone with pumped sampling for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde. Week-long continuous monitoring was also undertaken to capture day-to-day variations in indoor air quality during normal production.

A key challenge was that the reported mist occurred intermittently and was not present during the initial surveys. By combining short-term sampling with longer-term monitoring and discussions with staff, we were able to assess air quality over a representative period rather than relying on a single snapshot in time.
The assessment provided the client with an evidence-based understanding of indoor air quality within their facility and demonstrated our ability to deliver tailored workplace air quality investigations using a combination of environmental monitoring techniques.

Cass Allen was appointed to assist a client with two warehouse developments, both of which aimed to obtain Indoor Air Quality BREEAM Credit: Hea 02 – VOC emission levels (post construction).
The Air Quality team undertook on-site pumped diffusion tube sampling of Formaldehyde and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from within the office areas of the newly completed warehouses. The collected samples were analysed by a UKAS Accredited Laboratory and the results detailed and discussed in our report.
The results and reports confirmed that both warehouses met the criteria to justify the awarding of the applicable credit for BREEAM Hea 02, contributing to them gaining BREEAM Very Good status.
